Project Description/Process This semester in humanities we had the opportunity to create comedy sketches that we would be performing at Festival Del Sol. We learned all about the art of improv and how to write comedy sketches. Something that really helped us get used to making jokes and knowing what is appropriate and what is crossing the line, was an activity we would do weekly in class. We would all make a slide with information about a current news topic and discuss the event as a class to get more insight. After we were comfortable with what we knew about the event we would get into groups and create jokes that would inform about about the event but also get a laugh from it. This taught us to make fun of the oppressor and not the oppressed this is very important when making comedy sketches.
Once we were well informed about comedy and how to execute jokes correctly we began creating our own sketches. The process we went through to pick out the best sketches for Festival was sort of a bottleneck with a filter because we began with a lot of sketches and from there we narrowed it down to the best ones. This process was done through table reads, critiques and more. When we finally got to the point where we knew exactly what sketches would be in exhibition each group began to cast actors for their sketch. Once every group had their actors and their final scripts they began rehearsing and getting prepared as possible for exhibition.
Sketch Blurb Relatable Parent Moments The inspiration for this sketch came from teens having to put up with their parents. The perspectives used to create this sketch is what teens have to endure and go through everyday of their lives and our thoughts on what teens in the present day do/act like. This sketch is about a family of four and what the two teens have to put up with on a daily basis. In this sketch the mom Helen, is getting her daughters Makayla and Emily, in trouble constantly throughout the day. Throughout the sketch, you will find out how each character specifically acts and what actions they do to spark arguments.
During the sketch, you will see the differences between the sisters are and how Makayla the dominate sister acts towards Emily. To spark the comedy in the sketch we input extraness into the parent's character lines and with that, it gives off a different path of conversations or argument. Our sketch would be considered a mix of parody and absurd due to the fact that we are making fun of what parents act like.
