Problem Statement
The problem we were given to solve was what are the probabilities of you winning the CA Lottery. We were also handed the CA Lottery rules which are... That the first 5 numbers are between 1-47 and can't repeat, the mega is between 1-27 and it can repeat with any of the first 5. All you have to do is match all 5 of them and you win and what we had to find out is exactly how hard it is to match all 5 numbers.
Process and Solution
My initial guess was 1 in 21 million which wasn't too far away from the actual probability of winning it. I came up with the guess by looking back at my notes from the first time we had worked with this problem and decided that 1 in 21 million seemed to be the most accurate out of the rest of the guesses I had. A few of the other guesses included 1 in 1 billion, 1 in 50 million, and 1 in 2.5 million.
Problem Evaluation
This problem was very interesting because in the beginning it felt like it was impossible to solve it with the information that we were provided but after the the first day we started to look at the problem from a different way and it made it much easier. Overall this problem really pushed my thinking.
Self Evaluation
Tuesday 2/7
Today I felt like we were all confused and didn't know where to start. So what we did was start looking at the rules that were given to us and decided to try and figure out how many possible number combinations there are for the 5 numbers. If I had to give myself a grade it would have to be a 99% because I was working with Alejandro the whole period trying to come up with something and I didn't really get of task.
Wednesday2/8
Today I was late to school because I was sick we attempted to try and solve the problem from a different way and ask more questions through out the period.
Thursday2/9
I was sick this day and didn't come to school.
Friday 2/10
Today I talked to my group and caught up as much as I could with what they had done on Thursday.
