Environmental Public Service Announcements
Project Description
This semester in Biology we were given the task to create 90 second Public Service Announcement (PSA) about a variety of environmental issues that are currently affecting our world. We were placed into groups of four and each group had roles that consisted of a director, editor, videographer, and science consultant. Before we could start filming and deciding what topic our PSA's would be about we had to learn about the issues that are affecting the world to do this we went on various field trips, watched several videos and more. Once we had some knowledge on the topics we were set free and began brainstorming ideas and creating film proposals.

Process
The first steps we took in creating our PSA's were learn about the environmental issues we would be concentrating on and also learn about filming and photography skills that would eventually help us in the future to create professional content that is essential in creating PSA's. After we had seen PSA's, learned about environmental issues and learned photography skills we were able to begin brainstorming ideas for our PSA. My group started off with trash pollution but unfortunately another group had already began working on that topic so we had to change to the ozone layer. At first we weren't too sure about making our PSA on the ozone layer but it ended up being a great decision because not only did we learn about an environmental issue weren't too familiar with but we also added more variety to the PSA's of our classroom.
My group decided to make most of our PSA with stop motion drawing except for the intro which worked out really well and was unique compared to the rest of the PSA's. We filmed outside the classroom on our whiteboard tables and setting up the camera was a struggle, we couldn't find a way to keep it from falling and if we did it wasn't the right angle, but with some patients we found a way and began recording right away. The intro was recorded during a field trip at the San Diego Zoo and we filmed it a few times to make sure we had the correct shot. Once we had all of our footage we began piecing everything together on WeVideo and during that time we also started recording all the audio which was mostly a voiceover.
Finally I was able to finish the PSA since I had all the audio and footage and as soon as we were done we began to critique each others PSA's to improve them in any way possible. We even had students from a different grade come and critique them which improved them a lot since they had never seen them and have different perspectives. After all the critique we were finally able to exhibit them on Festival Del Sol.

Here are a few pictures of our story boards that had been critiqued and changed, you can also see the rubric we used to grade our PSA's and make edits based off the score we got. At first the rubric seemed very hard to reach the exceeding grade but once we began putting more effort in everything began to come together and we were able to reach the exceeding level.
Final PSA
Below you can see our final public service announcement about the ozone layer and how CFC's affect it we used stop motion drawing, text animations and other filming and editing techniques to create this PSA.
